$1.75 million released for improvement projects

News Release

Governor Linda Lingle released $1.75 million yesterday for improvement projects in various state buildings.

The projects will increase efficiency and safety.

"Improvements and maintenance to state facilities ensure the health and safety of members of the public who enter the buildings and state employees who work in them," Lingle said in a released statement.

Big Island

Hilo State Office Building: The project will upgrade the current elevator system to meet current safety and reliability standards. The elevator was originally installed in 1969.

North Kohala State Office Building: The project involves repairing damage from the October 15, 2006 earthquake. Repairs include patching and repainting walls and ceiling surfaces; replacing ceramic wall tiles, vinyl floor tiles, acoustical ceiling tiles and concrete blocks; and replacing damaged framed windows.

Kaua'i

LiŻhu'e State Office Building: The project will repair defective window frames on the third floor, which have allowed water to leak into the interior of the building. The repairs will specifically prevent electrical shortages from occurring within the building.

Maui

Wailuku State Office Building: Improvements to the building will be made to enclose the elevator to prevent mechanical problems due to water leakage.

Kahului Civic Center: The project will replace the exterior waterlines of the center, which run through an open field and have been damaged by vehicles driving over them.

O'ahu

Central Services Division (CSD): This project will connect the back-up generator to the Repair and Alteration (R&A) offices and gas pumps located at the Kakoi Street Baseyard. Currently, only CSD offices are connected to the back-up generator. The R&A offices have a critical role during a hurricane or earthquake and are responsible for emergency calls, debris removal and repairs to damaged state buildings and emergency shelters.

Ke'elikoŻlani Building: Repairs to the building located at 830 Punchbowl Street will include replacing the air conditioning units on the first, second and third floors of the building to provide proper cooling and more energy efficiency.

KekuŻanaoŻ'a Building: Repairs to the exterior walls of the building located at 465 S. King Street will be made to meet safety standards.

State Capitol Building: Projects include analyzing and assessing the air quality in the State Capitol; installing a new, non-chemical condenser water treatment system, which will replace the system installed during the 1995 renovations; repairing loose, upper roof tiles to prevent future damage; repairing cracks in the columns in the pond and basement to prevent deterioration, corrosion and leakage; upgrading the main electrical distribution switchboard; and replacing the existing fans that ventilate the basement parking area.

Drainage improvements will be made to the glass Aquarius Mosaic tile artwork located in the rotunda area. The current mosaic, which was installed in 1988 to replace the original 1969 artwork, does not have adequate drainage. This has caused extensive cracking and buckling on the surface of the mosaic. Construction is scheduled to be completed in January 2009.
