When Moanalua's Kaleinani Kabalis spikes a volleyball, you can hear it and the players on the other side of the court, if they're unlucky, can feel it.

Kabalis, a two-time Advertiser All-State selection, had 14 kills last night as host Moanalua beat Kalani, 25-19, 25-13, on opening night of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division volleyball season.

Kabalis, a 5-foot-8 senior outside hitter, had seven kills in each game and finished with 34 attacks and three errors.

She attacked from the left side and many of her spikes weren't touched by the block.

There were six lead changes and nine ties in the first game. Kabalis had four kills and a solo block as Moanalua went on a 9-1 game-ending run.

"I started slow I guess, but I picked it up at the end," Kabalis said.

Kabalis' first kill of the match cut Kalani's lead to 8-6. She had another on the next serve, and was all but unstoppable the rest of the night.

"Kaleinani is an outstanding player," Kalani coach Janeen Waialae said. "We stopped her pretty well in the beginning. I put up my best blocker with her and it slowed up the game.

"It's a matter of slowing her down because you can't stop her."

Na Menehune played a "dozen matches" in the preseason, including the 'Iolani and McKinley tournaments, according to coach Tommy Lake.

"We had a real tough preseason and we had some tough matches early, so I actually gave them the day off (Monday)," Lake said. "So it took them a while to get going."

Moanalua went on a 15-3 run to open the second game and was never threatened despite losing a point on the scoreboard. (It should have been 21-10 at one point, but the scoreboard had it 20-10).

"In the second game, we had more runs," Lake said.

Sarah Robinson, a 5-7 senior outside hitter, added five kills for Na Menehune. She also served five points in a row at the end of the first game.

"Sarah, who was a middle for us last year, is on the outside. That was one of the changes for us," Lake said.

Na Menehune also had seven aces and gave up only one. Kabalis was the primary passer.

"I was really happy with our passing," Lake said. "We've been serving tough all season."

Moanalua finished third in the state and second in the OIA last season, and Kabalis expects another solid season.

"I think we have really good chemistry again this year," she said. "We're rebuilding, but I think we'll have a good season."
