CFB: Delaware's Cuff scores 7 touchdowns in 49-31 win

Associated Press

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Omar Cuff scored seven touchdowns to tie a Division I-AA record and lead Delaware to a 49-31 victory over William & Mary tonight.

Cuff ran for 244 yards and six touchdowns on 30 carries times and caught four passes for 52 more yards and another score for the Blue Hens (1-0).

He tied a record set in 1996 by Northern Arizona's Archie Amerson and equaled two years later by McNeese State's Jessie Burton.

Cuff scored three second-quarter touchdowns to give Delaware a 21-3 halftime lead. Two came on 1-yard plunges, and they were sandwiched around a 38-yard run in which Cuff started left, then cut back and spun William & Mary defensive back Robert Livingston around before reaching the end zone untouched.

William & Mary cut the Blue Hens' edge to 21-10 when Jake Phillips lofted a 50-yard scoring pass over Delaware's Fred Andrew to 6-foot-6 tight end Andrew Atchison on the Tribe's first possession of the third quarter. But Cuff answered with a 2-yard run to finish a 70-yard drive on which he carried seven times for 30 yards.

Cuff began the final quarter with a 20-yard scoring play for a 35-10 lead.

Phillips sneaked over from a yard out to cut the margin to 35-17, but Cuff came back with a 19-yard pass reception for a score. He added another 2-yard touchdown after Phillips found D.J. McAulay for a 17-yard TD.

Playing the first Colonial Athletic Association football game — the 22-year-old league added the sport this season — Delaware and William & Mary combined for 42 points in the first 9:43 of the fourth quarter.
