Hawaii Superferry has no plans to go to Kauai today

Advertiser Staff

Hawaii Superferry spokeswoman Lori Abe said the company has no plans to go to Kaua'i today.

The ferry indefinitely postponed trips to Kaua'i after protesters prevented the ship from docking on Monday.

Superferry officials said they hope to return to Kaua'i as soon as they can do so safely.

U.S. Coast Guard officials said today that they are still working on a plan of action to provide the Hawaii Superferry with access to Nawiliwili Harbor.

Coast Guard officials today met with Superferry executives and state and county leaders to hash out a policy on keeping the harbor open. But Coast Guard Captain Charlie Ray said no specific actions has been decided at this point.

Ray defended Coast Guard officers on Kaua'i for "showing a degree of restraint."

"Operations on the water require a high degree of restraint by the officers on the scene," said Ray. "The potential for serious injury during a confrontation on the water is very significant."
