Hawaii food industry group aims to cut landfill waste

Advertiser Staff

The Hawaii Food Industry Association announced today that it has formed a statewide industry coalition to help reduce litter and the amount of waste being sent to landfills.

The Resource Recovery Committee is co-chaired by Joe Detro, sales and marketing vice president of Foodland Super Market Ltd., and Barry Taniguchi, president and chief executive officer of KTA Super Stores.

Hawai'i's food industry has been a leader in in diverting waste from entering landfills, trade group officials said. The industry has prevented tons of cardboard, wooden pallets, paper, cellophane wrap, green waste and other material from entering the waste stream by recycling or sending material back to its point-of-origin on the Mainland.
