HALEAKALA
Parking lot job closes trailhead

Advertiser Staff

Halemau'u Trailhead in Haleakala National Park is closed until Dec. 25 while road crews stabilize the roadbed outside the parking lot at the trailhead.

Hikers are not permitted on the section of trail leading to the parking lot. Instead, the crater wilderness and Holua Cabin can be accessed via the summit supply trail that leads to Hosmer Grove and parking. That's an additional 1.5 miles and 1,000-foot elevation change.

A half-mile stretch of road going to the summit will be reduced to one lane of traffic starting Tuesday. Park officials said automated signals will direct vehicles. However, motorists should expect delays of 15 to 30 minutes.
