    SOCCER

    CONCORDIA TOPS BYUH

Concordia (Irvine, Calif.) took advantage of a flagrant penalty by Brigham Young-Hawai'i to post a 2-1 victory yesterday in a women's soccer match at La'ie.

The Seasiders (0-1-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute on Jill Haar's goal.

However, in the final minute of the half, a BYUH player was given a red card for grabbing a Concordia player's jersey from behind in the corner of the 18-yard box. The BYUH player was ejected and Concordia made the ensuing penalty kick to tie it 1-1.

Despite being a player down, BYUH managed to contain Concordia (1-0) in the second half until the visitors scored the go-ahead goal in the 85th minute.

In other matches involving PacWest teams yesterday:

  • Karissa Robertson, Cherise Lee and Ashley Werner scored goals as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Central Washington, 3-0, in a women's match at Kea'au. Hilo is 2-2, Central Washington 0-2.

  • Dustin Daley scored a goal and Marc Fournier made eight saves as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Chico State, 1-0, in a men's match at Kea'au. Hilo is 1-3, Chico State 0-3.

  • Jason Aspelund scored two goals as Embry-Riddle (Phoenix, Ariz.) defeated Chaminade, 3-2, in a men's match at the Saint Louis School field. Embry-Riddle is 3-1. Marvin Mendoza scored both goals for Chaminade (0-2).

  • Cindy Jenkins and Ella Naber each scored two goals as Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) defeated Chaminade, 5-0, in a women's match at Saint Louis Field. Marissa Minor made 10 saves for Chaminade (0-2).

    CROSS COUNTRY

    BYUH RUNNERS FIRST

The Brigham Young-Hawai'i men's cross country team beat host Alaska-Fairbanks, 28-29, but lost to Hawai'i Pacific, 24-31, yesterday in a meet that was scored as two separate dual races at the Alaska Nanook Invitational.

BYUH's Golden Harper finished first in the 8-kilometer race in 27 minutes, 22 seconds.

In the women's races, Fairbanks beat HPU, 26-31, while only four BYUH runners finished the course so the Seasiders did not have a team score.

BYUH's Amanda Whitford finished the 6-kilometer race first in 25:17.
