City wreath contest winners announced

Mayor Mufi Hannemann announced Friday that Valerie Fernandez's wreath, "Tribute to Royalty," was named the overall best in show in the City and County of Honolulu's 22nd Annual Holiday Wreath Contest.Fernandez will be the recipient of the Mayor's Holly Award and a $200 cash prize.
Fernandez's award-winning wreath was selected from 83 entries submitted by island residents and groups. The wreath is covered with 5,000 pieces of individually cut and folded ribbon designed to represent a Hawaiian feather cloak. It is adorned with a Hawaiian helmet, crowned kahili, torch ginger blossoms, and crossed spears.

"Each year I am always amazed by how the wreath contest brings out the creative talents of Honolulu's crafters," Hannemann said. "The holiday spirit is expressed in each entry. Congratulations to the winners and mahalo to everyone who took the time to create a wreath to be enjoyed by all during the Honolulu City Lights celebration."
The wreaths will be on display in the Lane Gallery of Honolulu Hale through Jan. 1.
