Advertiser Staff

TOKYO — The United States defeated Argentina at the men's volleyball World Cup today, moving a step closer to qualifying for the Beijing Olympics.

William Priddy scored 17 points and Gabe Gardner added 13 to lead the U.S. to a 25-16, 25-19, 25-18 win over Argentina (5-5).

The U.S. (8-2) will face Russia tomorrow. The top three teams in the 12-nation tournament will secure places in next summer's Olympics.

Ryan Miller had 12 blocks for the U.S. team.

"We came out with a great level of execution in all aspects of our game," U.S. captain Thomas Hoff said. "Defensively we were extremely efficient. It was nice to do that right before our last match, and hopefully we can continue that tomorrow."

Russia and Brazil, both 8-1, played later today.

In other matches, Egypt defeated Tunisia in four sets; Spain blanked South Korea in three.
