Two motorcycle accidents on Maui; one fatal, one critical

Maui police are investigating two unrelated motorcycle accidents that killed a woman and critically injured a man within two minutes of each other around 11:30 p.m. Friday night on different parts of the island.

The fatal accident occurred on Wai'inu Drive, near the police station. A woman on a motorcycle suffered severe head injuries after the cycle tried to pass a car, went out of control and crashed on the highway, according to police. Lorraine J. La Frankie, 31, of Wailuku, was declared dead at Maui Memorial Medical Center yesterday afternoon. The man driving the motorcycle was treated and released.

The second accident occurred in heavy rain on Honoapi'ilani Highway near Ma'alaea between Wailuku and Lahaina when a

22-year-old lost control of his motorcycle and hit a guard rail, police said. He was hospitalized in critical condition, then taken by helicopter to The Queen's Medical Center, where his left foot was amputated, police said.
