Injuries force Lahainaluna to adapt

HONOLULU — For a few Lahainaluna High School football players, yesterday's defeat in the First Hawaiian Bank Division II State Championships final at Aloha Stadium came with an even rougher ending.

The Lunas suffered injuries early in a 28-21 loss to 'Iolani that forced them to make adjustments in an effort to contain the Raiders' passing attack.

'Iolani seemed to take advantage — particularly in the second half, when the Raiders put up 214 yards of offense.

Junior defensive back Rekzar Sapla was the first Lahainaluna player forced out of the game, working his way off the field following the opening kickoff while holding his right arm, which was broken.

Not much later, senior defensive back-receiver Matthew Lawless also left the game after suffering a concussion.

"They reset his arm and then we got another player with a concussion,'' Lahainaluna coach Bobby Watson said to The Maui News.

"They're OK, nothing life-threatening. They'll be ready to go later on.''

Unfortunately for Lawless, who anchored coverage on the deep ball this year, there won't be a later on with the Lunas.

"We had to put guys in there that wouldn't usually be playing at that point in the game and we had to make a lot of adjustments — so it was kind of tough on the team,'' said Lahainaluna safety Lake Casco.

Casco was one of the Lunas who helped fill the gaps, including running down 'Iolani's Reid Furukawa just short of the goal line on a 71-yard reception.

"I just had to take care of deep stuff, because Matt is usually our deep guy,'' Casco said. "It was what we expected (from Iolani) — they executed really well.''

Lahainaluna kicker Ivan Delaney became a contributor in the secondary, entering somewhat unfamiliar territory under the lights despite getting work in drills this season.

"I practiced there every day in practice,'' Delaney said. "I had the butterflies at first but when the first play happened (I was ready).''

Iolani quarterback Kela Marciel finished 17-of-28 passing for 290 yards and three touchdowns.

"Irregardless of what happens to personnel, hopefully get kids ready to play and you can put them in there and hopefully they do their best,'' Watson said.
