Advertiser Staff

Maui police have identified the Wailuku woman who died Friday in a motorcycle crash as Lorraine J. La Frankie, 31.

La Frankie was a passenger on a motorcycle that crashed at 11:26 p.m. on Wai'inu Road, 353 feet east of Waiale Drive in Wailuku.

La Frankie died yesterday at Maui Memorial Medical Center at 2:45 p.m., according to police.

Her death was Maui's 20th traffic fatality of the year. It was also the fourth motorcycle fatality on the Valley Island and the 23rd in Hawai'i in 2007 as compared to 20 total statewide for the year 2006.

Police said the male operator of the motorcycle was headed toward Kahului on Wai'inu Road when he passed a vehicle from his left in a no-passing zone.

After making the pass, the operator lost control of the motorcycle when he maneuvered it back to his own lane. The passenger was thrown from the motorcycle as the operator attempted to lay it down on its right side, police said.

The operator was treated for injuries and later released, police said.
