Wet week ahead; flooding possible Wednesday

Advertiser Staff

Islanders should prepare to be wet for the next couple of days as unsettled weather works its way southwest across the state, according to the National Weather Service.

A high surf advisory was in effect for most north- and west-facing shores of Maui, Moloka'i, Kaua'i and O'ahu. Surf is expected to reach 15-20 feet along north-facing shores and 10-15 feet along west shores, said Ian Morrison, National Weather Service meteorologist.

Widespread flooding is not expected today, but residents should brace for the possibility of flooding on Wednesday as another storm front passes through, Morrison said. Rain is expected to hit Kauai first about noon today and move on to O'ahu by later this afternoon, Morrison said.

"We should see some localized flooding, but not widespread," Morrison said. "This is a typical winter storm."

While most of the islands were enshrouded in cloud cover, the Big Island was mostly clear, with warm temperatures, he said.

Come mid-week, a kona low coming from the western Pacific will bring heavy rain through the end of the week.
