San Diego tops UH in men's basketball, 81-67

Associated Press

SAN DIEGO — Brandon Johnson scored a season-high 25 points to lead San Diego past Hawaii 81-67 today.

The Toreros (4-5) beat the Warriors (2-4) for the second time this season. The teams opened the season against each other Nov. 9, with the Toreros prevailing 73-72.

In the rematch, San Diego spotted the Warriors a 12-6 lead before taking control of the game, with Johnson making three 3-pointers in a three-minute span to spark the turnaround.

A 22-4 run gave San Diego a 28-16 lead with 8:45 left in the first half, and the Toreros led by double digits the rest of the way.

Johnson was 4-for-7 on 3-pointers, which helped open the inside for forward Gyno Pomare, who had 18 points and eight rebounds. Johnson's 25 points was just one shy of his career best.

Chris Lewis came off the bench for 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Toreros.

Stephen Verwers and Bobby Nash had 15 points apiece to lead Hawaii. It was a career high for the senior Verwers.

Nash, Hawaii's leading scorer, played only five minutes in the first half after drawing three quick fouls.
