HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police are hunting for a 48-year-old O'ahu man who allegedly attacked an acquaintance in the Fern Forest subdivision in upper Puna last weekend.

Police have obtained an arrest warrant for Fred Silva III, who was visiting family on the Big Island at the time of the incident.

Puna police and medics were summoned Nov. 25 to Kaleponi Drive by a friend of the injured man who found him crawling on the roadway, looking for help.

The man had multiple head and body injuries, but was conscious and able to tell police details of the attack and the partial identity of the attacker.

The injured man said he was awakened last Saturday evening or early last Sunday by a man who entered the home and attacked him with a rubber mallet and a baseball bat.

The injured man said he fell unconscious, and awoke Sunday morning. He suffered numerous broken bones and internal injuries from the beating, and was at Hilo Medical Center in stable condition.

Silva was recently released from prison after serving a 20-year term for a 1986 manslaughter on O'ahu.

Police ask that anyone with information on Silva's whereabouts call 808-935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All calls to Crime Stoppers are kept confidential.
