Two rescued from river on Big Island

A man who jumped into a river on the Big Island to rescue his wife kept them both afloat until firefighters could pull them to safety yesterday morning.Firefighters on the Big Island received a distress call at 11:01 a.m. from the husband, who said his 23-year-old wife slipped while sightseeing and hit multiple ledges on her way down before landing in the river. After calling 9-1-1, the husband, 34, jumped into the river to help his wife and wait for rescue personnel. The woman suffered head injuries and the man was also injured, but neither fatally.
They were rescued within 15 minutes of the firefighters receiving the call.
The accident occurred near Old Mamalahoa Highway.
