O'Neill World Cup of Surfing competition suspended

Advertiser Staff

Competition in the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing was suspended about noon today due to dangerously big surf.

The contest began this morning at Sunset Beach with smooth ocean conditions and rising surf that was 12 to 15 feet, Hawaiian style, early on.

That means wave faces were about double that size, creating challenging conditions for competitors, said Jodi Wilmott, surf promoter.

But waves quickly got bigger, and competition was suspended after about eight heats, organizers said.
