Baseball: Tigers' Rogers can earn $2 million in bonuses

Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Kenny Rogers can earn an additional $2 million in performance bonuses under his new contract with the Detroit Tigers and would receive the entire amount if he pitches 200 innings.

Rogers agreed last week to return to the Tigers for an $8 million base salary, the same as in his previous contract, which covered 2006 and 2007.

His new deal calls for bonuses of $250,000 each for 150, 160, 170 and 180 innings, and $500,000 each for 190 and 200 innings. The payment of any bonuses he earns would be deferred until 2010.

Rogers, a 43-year-old left-hander, negotiated the contract on his own after terminating agent Scott Boras.

Rogers had a blood clot removed from his pitching shoulder in the spring, returned June 22, then was sidelined from late July to early September by inflammation in his left elbow. He went 3-4 with a 4.43 ERA in 11 starts and 63 innings this year.

In 2006, Rogers helped lead the Tigers to their first World Series appearance since 1984.
