The Honorable George Ariyoshi recently received the inaugural Space Ambassador Pioneer Award from the Japan-U.S. Science, Technology and Space Applications Program after delivering a talk titled "Hawai'i's Expanding Role on the Space Frontier." The former Hawai'i governor is JUSTSAP's honorary adviser for the United States and has been instrumental in launching PISCES, the Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems, which was signed into law by Gov. Linda Lingle on June 7.

Established in 1990 under the jurisdiction of the U.S.-Japan Leadership Council, JUSTSAP is a unique forum of distinguished scientists, educators, government officials, and business professionals dedicated to identifying and exploring innovative opportunities for international collaboration in space exploration. JUSTSAP members convene in Hawai'i each November to report on individual team projects and plan for future year activities.

  • DR. David Paperny, adolescent medicine specialist for Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, was awarded the Byron Oberst Award recently at the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference & Exhibition in San Francisco. Paperny played an instrumental role in the development of pediatric content for Kaiser Permanente's HealthConnect program, an online system that provides doctors, nurses, and members with up-to-the-minute medical history information and eliminates the inefficiencies and errors that paper-based systems can bring.

    Kaiser Permanente's HealthConnect program integrates a member's clinical record with appointments, registration, and billing to deliver improvements in care delivery and patient satisfaction.

    In addition to his contributions to HealthConnect, Paperny is also known worldwide for his achievements in computerized health screening and health education multimedia. He created Teen and Young Adult Checkup, a uniquely effective approach to health evaluation and education of adolescents using computers, semi-peer health counselors and nurses to provide comprehensive adolescent preventive health services. In the area of health education, Paperny created various DVDs on topics such as childcare and asthma.

  • AARP Hawaii State President Stuart Ho recently received the Business Leadership Hawaii 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award. Ho has served as AARP Hawaii's leading spokesman on healthcare reform and financial security since his appointment as volunteer president earlier this year. He has spent much of his time raising awareness of the profound social implications related to Hawai'i's aging population, and helping businesses adapt to these changes in ways that benefit older workers, employers and our community as a whole.

    Ho retired this year as president and chief executive officer of Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific. He is a former director of Aloha Airlines, Bank of Hawaii, Gannett Company Inc., Pacific Resources, Inc. (until merged into BHP Billiton), College Retirement Equities Fund and TIAA-CREF Mutual Funds.

  • Cyrus Sumida, a District Supervisor I for the Department of Water Supply in the Ka'u District, has received the 2007 William Y. Thompson Award. Sumida is known throughout Hawai'i's water industry for dedication, superior work performance, outstanding service and love for the people of the state.

    Sumida is in charge of the day-to-day operations of the water system in the district, providing safe drinking water to 1,500 customers. He takes pride in his district as evidenced by the immaculate condition of tank sites and facilities, and is known for personally visiting customers who have complaints so that he can solve the problem right there.

  • The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs' Office of the Securities Commissioner was awarded the 2007 Investor Education Outreach Award by the North American Securities Administrators Association.

    The award was presented to Hawai'i's Investor Education specialist, Theresa Kong Kee, at NASAA's annual Investor Education Training Seminar in Atlanta last month.

    The award recognizes the state, province or territory in North America with the greatest consumer outreach through their investor education program run by the state, province or territory's securities administrator.

    Organized in 1919, NASAA is the oldest international organization devoted to investor protection. NASAA is a voluntary association whose membership consists of 67 state, provincial, and territorial securities administrators in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada and Mexico.

  • United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii's Board Member, Daniel Dung, was recently recognized by his employer, Morgan Stanley, for his outstanding volunteer efforts in the community.

    This nationwide award recognized Dung for his volunteer efforts and commitment to those with disabilities in Hawai'i.

    The Morgan Stanley Foundation awarded United Cerebral Palsy Association $5,000 for Dung's accomplishments.

  • Peter Kaneshige of Kapa'a and Gerald Yamane of Kailua were recently awarded Agency Hands in the Community Awards for their commitment to volunteering in the community. With this award comes a $500 grant from The Allstate Foundation to the non-profit organizations at which they volunteer.

    Kaneshige volunteers regularly with Hawaii Mothers' Milk Inc. which is a comprehensive breast-feeding resource center for both families and health professionals in Hawai'i.

  • Jayne Peterson of Foster Realty Inc. has been awarded the Accredited Buyer Representation designation by the Real Estate Buyer's Agent Council Inc. of the National Association of Realtors.

    She joins more than 32,000 real-estate professionals in North America who have earned the ABR designation. All were required to successfully complete a comprehensive course in buyer representation and an elective course focusing on a buyer representation specialty, both in addition to submitting documentation verifying professional experience.

  • Interior designer, MARION PHILPOTTS-MILLER has won both the 2007 Grand Overall Award and an Award of Excellence in Commercial Design from the Hawai'i Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers for her work on Aina Nalu. She transformed a former budget tour property near downtown Lahaina into a sophisticated, contemporary low-rise resort condominium that retains the feel of the Islands.

    Philpotts & Associates design teams also receiving awards were: ANNE TANAKA for the condominium model for the Beach Villas at Ko Olina; LOWELL TOM and JILL PHANTHAVONG in the large residence category for their work on the Anekona Kukio residence; and MARY PHILPOTTS an award of merit in the same category for the Heidrich residence at Kuki'o on the Big Island.

  • DUANE UCHIDA has been awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Certification in Architecture.

    The LEED Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED promotes a whole building approach to sustainability in the areas of water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

    Uchida is project designer for Kober, Hanssen, Mitchell Architects.
