Those of us who read our monthly HECO envelope know there's a treasure trove of energy tips to be found in them. Such as:

  • Batch your holiday cooking treats. Yes, you can bake potatoes while the oven is cooking your Christmas fruitcake. (Just watch the browning on the top, since some ovens may have variable heat absorption with multiple items.) And don't let the pans touch, to allow maximum heat absorption.

  • To see if the items are cooked, use the oven light, rather than opening the door, which wastes energy.

    KEEP IT SIMPLE

HOMEMADE FOOD FOR YOUR CUT FLOWERS

Tips for making your own flower food for freshly cut bouquets, from Flora-2000 (www.flora2000.com): Citric acid, such as a few drops of lime juice, acts as an acidifier. Add 3 drops of bleach each time the water is changed to prevent bacteria growth. Add 1/2 cup of clear carbonated beverage to one vase of water, then a capful of hydrogen peroxide every time the water is changed. (Use one part carbonated to 3 parts water.)

    FINAL WORD

"I would like to work with Johnny Depp. I've known him a long time. I think he's so interesting, and I think we look alike in a funny way. ... Johnny Depp and I will play brother and sister in something."
