CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT — Novice and experienced bird-watchers may join the Hawaii Audubon Society's annual Christmas bird count, Dec. 14-Jan. 5. MALAMA ULUPO HEIAU — Help the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club and 'Ahahui Malama i ka Lokahi restore Ulupo Heiau, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday. KANE'OHE WETLAND PROJECT — Volunteers needed Saturday to help the Sierra Club remove mangrove and other invasive species from wetlands on Marine Corps Base Hawaii to create a habitat for endangered waterbirds. Submit name and contact information by Thursday to Annette Kaohelaulii at 235-5431.

POUHALA MARSH RESTORATION — The Hawai'i Nature Center is restoring Pouhala Marsh in Waipahu. Volunteers are needed to pull pickleweed and mangrove 8:30-11:30 a.m. Dec. 15. Bring work gloves, water, hat, sunscreen, towel and change of clothes; covered footwear and long pants required. Contact Pauline Kawamata at 955-0100, ext. 18.

CHUN'S REEF CLEANUP — Join Adopt-A-Beach Hawaii and Save The Sea Turtles International at noon Dec. 15 for Chun's Reef Beach highway and coastal cleanup. CRATER OVERNIGHTER — The Friends of Haleakala National Park will conduct a service trip Dec. 15-17 to plant native grasses, shrubs and trees as part of a restoration project. Accommodations at Kapalaoa Cabin. Call Farley Jacob at 808-248-7660.

BIRD BANDERS — Volunteers are needed to assist in bird banding and data collection to investigate malaria in native and introduced birds on O'ahu. Must be able to hike moderate distances and carry equipment. Contact Kira Krend at krend @hawaii.edu.

WEED & POT CLUB — Maui Nui Botanical Garden's Weed & Pot Club meets 8:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesdays, 150 Kanaloa Ave., Kahului; weed, rake, trim, transplant nursery plants. Tools, gloves, drinking water provided; bring sunscreen, wear shoes.
