Precautions you can take for high winds

Advertiser Staff

The city Department of Emergency Management warns people to be prepared for the strong southwest winds expected today and through tomorrow evening.

The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning, with winds from 25 to 40 mph and gusts up to 60 mph expected for most of the state.

Residents should secure loose objects outdoors that may blow about and avoid outdoor activity, according to a press release from emergency management.

Other precautions people can take:

  • Trim dead wood, and weak and overhanging branches.

  • Have flashlights, battery-operated radio and spare batteries on hand.

  • Drivers of large trucks and SUVs should be prepared for sudden gusts that could cause momentary loss of control of the vehicle.

  • Listen for safety instructions from emergency management and the weather service.

In the case of a high-wind-related emergency, call 911.
