Emergency Operation Center activated

Advertiser Staff

The city has activated its Emergency Operation Center in response to a storm front that is moving over the Islands and is expected to generate gusty winds of up to more than 60 mph starting at about 6 or 7 this evening.

"Before the winds come we're going to see some very strong bands of showers," said John Cummings, spokesman for the city's department of Emergency Management. "We've has a lot of rain these last few days. So, we're saturated at this point, and that's not a good combination."

Cummings said city officials were briefed by the National Weather Service, which said O'ahu could expect to feel the effects of the storm early this evening.

Emergency center officials are bringing in staff who will be staying overnight, including city department personnel from police, fire, emergency medical service, and transportation services.

The Red Cross will also be in the center, and requests for representatives from Hawaiian Electric Company, a gas company and possibly the Honolulu Board of Water Supply have been issued.
