Brennan a Heisman finalist, headed to New York

Advertiser Staff

University of Hawai'i quarterback Colt Brennan has been invited to New York as a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, UH coach June Jones confirmed tonight.

"This is great for the state and the school," Jones said. "When has that ever happened for our school? Never. It'll probably never happen again."

The invitations will be announced tomorrow. Finalists are invited to attend the announcement of the Heisman winner at a show televised live from the Hilton New York.

Brennan declined to comment, saying, "I haven't received an official invitation. It might come tomorrow, but I don't want to say anything now to make the Heisman committee mad."

Last season, Brennan had the best statistical season by a quarterback in NCAA history.

In January, during a tearful news conference, Brennan announced he would return to UH for his senior season, relinquishing an opportunity to apply for the 2007 National Football League draft.

"This was part of the decision," Jones said. "Told him if he came back, we'd have a chance to go undefeated. If we did that, with our last three or four games on ESPN, he'd have a chance (to be a Heisman finalist). All of that is coming true."

Now, Jones said, "We don't know if he'll win it. But he deserves to win it. He's the best player in the nation."
