Rep. Hirono lauds UH football team on House floor

By DENNIS CAMIRE

WASHINGTON — A beaming Rep. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawai'i, a University of Hawai'i graduate, congratulated her alma mater's football team on the House floor today for their selection to play the University of Georgia in the Sugar Bowl at New Orleans on Jan. 1.

The Warriors' record of 12 wins and no losses is the best in the school's history, and they are the Western Athletic Conference champions, Hirono said.

"Coach June Jones and the entire Warrior team deserves recognition for all that they have accomplished this season," Hirono said.

Holding up two footballs signed by Jones and Colt Brennan, Hirono said the quarterback is her candidate for the Heisman Trophy.

"I keep them (the footballs) prominently displayed in my office in the District of Columbia as reminders of the Warriors' success," Hirono said. "I join the rest of the Aloha State in cheering on the University of Hawai'i and wish the team good luck in the Sugar Bowl."
