3 emergency shelters opened on Leeward Coast

Advertiser Staff

Leeward Coast residents in need of emergency shelter due to the expected high surf this evening can go to Nanakuli High School gym, Ma'ili Elementary School cafeteria and Wai'anae Elementary School cafeteria.

The City's Department of Transportation Services and TheBus will provide evacuation shuttles to the designated locations for those in need of assistance.

Evacuation shuttles will be at Water Street, Ma'ili Beach Park and Nanakuli Beach Park and identified by a lighted "EVACUATION" destination sign. There is no charge for evacuation shuttles.

In addition, the city was preparing four other shelters in case they are needed. They are not open at this time.

The potential shelters are at Waimanalo District Park, Kailua District Park, Waialua District Park and Brigham Young University-Hawai'i.

Residents going to a shelter must bring with them non-perishable food, water, clothing, bedding, personal medications, etc.

Family pets are not allowed in public evacuation shelters. If you have pets take them with you when you evacuate. Pets in their carriers should be placed in your vehicle which is parked in a shaded and secure area next to the shelter. Be sure to bring food, water and cleaning supplies for each pet.
