Secure those garbage cans; high winds on the way

Advertiser Staff

The National Weather Service has posted a high-wind warning for Kaua'i, O'ahu, Moloka'i and Maui that is expected to last until Wednesday evening.

Strong southwest winds from 25 to 40 mph with gusts over 60 mph will arrive on Kaua'i this afternoon, on O'ahu tonight and on Maui early Wednesday.

The wind will be strong enough to move unsecured objects such as garbage cans, lawn furniture and holiday decorations, the weather service said.

Damage to trees can be expected along with scattered power outages, the service said. Residents are advised to have flashlights available.

A vigorous storm system passing to the north that is driving a cold front across the islands today and tomorrow is the cause of the high winds.

A high-wind warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected or occurring. Sustained winds of 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.
