Storm system bringing high wind watch

Advertiser Staff

Strong southwest winds will be affecting portions of the state this afternoon through tomorrow, the National Weather Service said.

A vigorous storm system passing to the north is driving a cold front across the islands, bringing strong and possibly damaging southwest winds with gusts over 50 mph. The winds should reach Niiahu and Kauai this afternoon, O'ahu tonight and Maui by tomorrow morning.

The strongest winds are likely to occur over the higher terrain and the usual windward sides of the islands, the weather service said.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service suggest taking precautions if you're in these areas, such as securing loose outdoor objects like lawn furniture, garbage cans and holiday decorations. You should also remove weak tree branches and make sure you have flashlights ready in the event of power failure.

A high wind watch means there is a chance for sustained winds of 40 mph or more, or gusts of at least 58 mph.
