Downed trees causing delays

Advertiser Staff

Two downed trees are blocking roads on O'ahu this morning.

Crews are still cutting up and removing a large tree that fell across Elm Street in Makiki at about 10:15 last night, and a second large tree that fell across the right lane of Anoiki Street in Kunia at about 4:11 a.m. is also awaiting removal.

The tree that fell on Elm Street is about 25 feet high and was on the property of the Bodaiji Mission at 1251 Elm St. before it fell.

A 78-year-old Bo tree, or ficus religiosa, lies in the parking lot of the Bodaiji Mission on the corner of Elm and Birch Streets. Neighbors heard a crackling sound after 10 p.m. last night and then the sound of the tree splitting in half, part of the tree falling across Elm Street. A spokesman for the church said the tree is inspected regularly by an arborist and appeared to be healthy. City crews spent the entire night cutting up the tree and removing debris.
