High surf warning for northern shores

Advertiser Staff

A high surf warning remains in effect for all north-facing shores except on the Big Island until noon today, the National Weather Service said. A high surf warning is also in effect for the west-facing shores of Kaua'i and O'ahu through noon.

The very large north northwest swell will peak overnight and gradually subside today, but the surf will rough and near-shore currents will be strong, Weather Service forecasters said.

A high surf warning means that damaging surf is expected or is already occurring along the affected shorelines.

Surf overnight along northern shores will be 20 to 30 feet, gradually subsiding to 14 to 18 feet today. Surf along west-facing shores is 16 to 22 feet early this morning and 10 to 14 feet by this afternoon.

Eastern shores will see surf 6 to 10 feet early this morning, but it will be 3 to 6 feet today. Southern shores will see surf 3 feet or less.

Another large northwest swell is expected tomorrow night and Thursday.
