Hawaii Red Cross closes shelters; volunteers deployed

Advertiser Staff

American Red Cross shelters opened last night on the Leeward Coast in response to heavy winds and rain have closed as of 11 a.m., but the Red Cross has also dispersed volunteer teams this afternoon to three areas where severe damage has been reported.

Red Cross spokeswoman Jennifer Walter said volunteer teams are in Kaneohe, Kahaluu and Waianae to assess homes damaged by the storm.

"We've had roughly about a dozen reports from those areas, mostly of damaged roofs," Walter said. "Our teams are going out to those homes, but they are also driving around those areas to see if there are any homes damaged that we haven't heard about yet."

Shelters located at Nanakuli High School and Waianae Elementary School each housed five residents overnight.

A third shelter located at Maile Elementary School was closed around midnight due to power issues.

Red Cross officials said if your home has been damaged due to this storm, you may contact the American Red Cross at 739-8113.
