Crews to work into night on downed telephone poles

Advertiser Staff

Hawaiian Telcom said its crews are planning to work into the night to fix 18 to 19 downed or damaged telephone poles near Nanakuli.

Spokesman Ron Mizutani said the poles are being worked on with Hawaiian Electric Co. repair crews and should be repaired by tomorrow.

He said the workers plan to move on to Maili, where there are 18 poles are either downed or damaged. Mizutani said none of the poles a threat to traffic or blocking lanes.

He said telephone service to that area has been uninterrupted.

"We've been hopping from spot to spot," said Mizutani.

He said as of about 5 p.m.:

  • A Hawaiian Electric crew took care of a pole that needed repairs Turtle Bay. Hawaiian Telcom crews took care of repairs to a pole at Sharks Cove and another in Laie.

  • Workers have checked on problems on Kaukonahua Road in Waialua. Mizutani said cables are down in fields beside some parts of the road and will have permanent repairs later.

  • In Hale'iwa crews have removed a downed pole that was blocking Achiu Lane. Mizutani said they would return later to make permanent repairs.

  • Work was to be finished at noon on a couple of downed poles in Kahalu'u, including one that had split in half on Kamehameha Highway near the Hygienic Store.

  • In Kane'ohe, crews had repaired a damaged pole on Paleka Road.

Mizutani said almost all of Hawaiian Telcom's telephone service was available to customers. Customers in areas where electricity was out should still have telephone service unless they have cordless telephones that require power.

He said there were some pockets where the service was out but there were no estimates at this time as to the number of customers affected.
