We've all heard the news of the growing shortage of physicians in Hawai'i — particularly in specialty areas. Hardest hit have been our Neighbor Islands and more rural communities.

Dr. Cynthia Goto, president of the Hawaii Medical Association, took questions on this issue and on healthcare in Hawai'i during a live blog chat today.

Low reimbursements and high malpractice premiums, along with Hawai'i's high cost of living, has prompted a growing number of Hawai'i's doctors to leave the Islands. And there's growing concern that we've reached a crisis point.

Established in 1856, the HMA is a voluntary, professional membership organization for physicians, resident physicians, and medical students. HMA, part of the American Medical Association (AMA), is also the parent organization for Hawai'i's five component medical societies that operate independently, but in a network with the HMA.
