A mid-afternoon fire today caused major damage to a wooden two-story Kaimuki home at 839-B 21st Avenue.

Investigators estimated damage to the home at $600,000, said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig. Cause of the fire is under investigation, added Seelig.

The fire started at 2:40 p.m. and firefighters declared it under control at 4:06 p.m.

Five companies and 25 firefighters responded, said Seelig.

Two adults and a child who were at home when the fire started escaped unharmed, said Seelig.

The Hawai'i Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting seven people displaced by the fire.
