Applications available for 40 affordable Kauai rentals

Kaua'i Mayor Bryan Baptiste today announced that applications are available for 40 new affordable rental units at Kalepa Village Phase III in Hanama'ulu.

The apartment complex, across from King Kaumuali'i Elementary School is being developed by Kaua'i Housing Development Corp. in partnership with the county. The units will be ready for occupancy in March.

Applications are available weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Hawai'i Affordable Properties Inc. management office at 4535 Kalepa Circle. Deadline to submit applications is Jan. 15 at 4 p.m. Selection will be determined by a lottery, which will be held Feb. 1 at 10 a.m. at the Kalepa Village Recreation Center.

Applicants' eligibility requirements include income limits of $27,780 (one person), $31,740 (family of two), $35,700 (family of three), and $39,660 (family of four).

The monthly rent for a one-bedroom, one bath, 643- or 645-square-foot apartment will be $650.

A two-bedroom, one bath, 822- or 851-square-foot apartment will rent for $750 a month.

The monthly rents do not include electricity or gas costs.

Each unit is equipped with a refrigerator, stove, washer and a dryer; parking, solar-heated water, and use of recreation center.
