Huge surf expected on all Hawaiian islands

Advertiser Staff

With surf expected to hit 25 to 35 feet tonight through tomorrow afternoon along northern shores and 15 to 25 feet along western shores, the National Weather Service is continuing its high surf warning until 6 p.m. tomorrow.

The high surf warning is for the west and north shores of Ni'ihau, Kaua'i and O'ahu through tomorrow, while a high surf advisory has been issued for north- and west-facing shores of Moloka'i, Maui and the Big Island until tomorrow afternoon.

The south shores of all islands is under a high surf advisory.

The National Weather Service said the largest surf will be hitting Kaua'i, Ni'ihau and O'ahu. In addition, strong southwest winds will generate rough wind-blown surf along south shores.

A high surf warning means damaging surf is expected or already occurring. Coastal residents should make preparations to protect life and property from the large waves and coastal flooding.

An advisory means surf will be much higher than normal, resulting in hazardous wave action and dangerous rip currents.
