DLNR releases state park closures, damage update

Advertiser Staff

Several state parks have been either closed or were damaged by the storm, Department of Land and Natural Resources spokeswoman Deb Ward said. Most of the damage has been caused by fallen trees or spot flooding.

An island-by-island look at what the DLNR has closed and the damages it has found as of 1:30 p.m. today:

O'AHU

  • The upper portion of Keaiwa State Recreation Area and Aiea Loop Trail is closed due to fallen trees/branches.

  • A fallen tree was removed from the residence access entry road at Kahana State Park.

  • At Malaekahana State Park, some trees are down and there is ponding in the parking lot. It will reopen once a fallen coconut tree is removed from the entry road. No damage or injuries have been reported.

  • The Keawa'ula entry gate was closed at the Kaena Point State Park at 10 a.m. due to extremely high surf and at the recommendation of the city's Ocean Safety Branch.

  • There is a power outage at Diamond Head State Monument comfort station; the sewage pump building is damaged, and the pump is not working. The National Guard is currently working on the problem. The park is still open, but it may need to close if the sewage system is not repaired soon, Ward said.

  • The makai section of He'eia is closed due to debris and a power outage, but the mauka area is open.

    KAUA'I

  • Kalalau Trail is closed due to high winds and stream flooding.

  • Polihale entry road is closed due to flooding.

  • Trees and branches have been falling at Koke'e and Waimea Canyon State Parks, but the lookouts are still open. Some electrical power outages affect cabins at Koke'e. The DLNR has stopped issuing camping permits for the Kokee campground due to falling branches.

    MAUI AND MOLOKA'I

  • Iao Valley State Park, Waianapanapa State Park, Polipoli Springs State Park, Palaau State Park and Makena State Park are all closed.

    BIG ISLAND

  • A tree fell at Wailoa River State Park, damaging a car but nobody was hurt.

  • A tree fell at one of the entry roads to Wailoa Center, but access is available by an alternate route and the center is open.
