Hawaii stock index jumps as Hoku shares climb

The Bloomberg-Honolulu Advertiser Hawai'i Index rose as shares of Hoku Scientific jumped 21 percent on news that it is lining up financing for its Idaho polysilicon plant.

The 11-member stock index climbed 2.86 points to 98.17, as seven issues rose, two fell and two remained unchanged.

Hoku climbed $1.85 to $10.72 a day after it announced a non-binding agreement with Merrill Lynch for a $185 million loan that will go toward building the new plant.

Central Pacific Financial increased 7.7 percent, or $1.54, to $21.48. Bank of Hawaii was up 3.2 percent, or $1.67, to $53.65.
