High-surf advisory issued for north, west shores
Advertiser Staff
The National Weather Service has issued a high-surf advisory, saying very large surf will continue to affect the north- and west-facing shores of all islands, with the biggest surf pounding Kaua'i, Ni'ihau and O'ahu. In addition, strong west to southwest winds will generate rough and choppy surf along south-facing shores.
A high-surf advisory means that surf along affected shorelines will be much higher than usual, resulting in hazardous wave action and dangerous rip currents.
Wave faces along north-facing shores on O'ahu today will increase to heights of 20 feet to 30 feet, forecasters said.
Surf along west-facing shores will rise to heights of 15 feet to 20 feet today.
Surf along south-facing shores will lower to heights of 6 feet to 8 feet, but conditions will remain choppy.
Surf along east-facing shores will remain 3 feet to 6 feet through today.
The large northwest swell currently pounding the north- and west-facing shores will gradually decline Friday. A moderate northwest swell will arrive over the weekend and continue into early next week.
