Crews checking Maui areas for residents needing help

KULA, Maui — Police, firefighters and National Guard troops today will be canvassing homes in the Polipoli, Waiohuli Hawaiian Homesteads and nearby areas of Kula to check if residents are safe and need assistance.

Six Polipoli residents were transported to safety last night and two homes were deemed to be in imminent danger, said county spokeswoman Mahina Martin.

The 30 or so National Guard personnel from across the state and Guam who are helping local authorities already were on Maui for a training exercise and were diverted to provide storm assistance. The National Guard's 93rd Civil Support Team also has offered the use of 78 troops.

The American Red Cross closed shelters in Kula and Makawao at 9 p.m. last night after providing temporary lodging to a total of 13 people, Martin said. The shelter at the Kihei Community Center remained open overnight, providing a haven for 15 people. Donations of food and drinks were provided by Pizza Hut, Cirpico's Pizza, Foodland, Minit Stop and Starbucks.

County and state crews were assessing Kula Highway, which was closed when a mudslide roared across the road yesterday afternoon. Officials also were checking on any additional damage to homes in the area.
