5 local nominees for Best Hawaiian album at Grammys

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

A trio of ki ho'alu (slack key) recordings and two female vocalists will compete for Best Hawaiian Music Album in the 50th anniversary edition of the Grammy Awards next Feb. 10. The underlying issue is: Will instrumental music prevail over Hawaiian vocals, as demonstrated three times since the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences first launched the Hawaiian music category.

The Island nominees are:

  • "Ka Hikina O Ka Hau (The Coming Of The Snow)," by Keola Beamer (Dancing Cat Productions). Beamer, a prolific singer-composer-musician from a fabled kama'aina family, is making his first appearance on the ballot with his all-instrumental disc.

  • "Hawaiiana," by Tia Carrere (Daniel Ho Creations). Carrere, a singer-actress widely known for voicing the role of Nani on Disney's "Lilo & Stitch," also is a first-time nominee.

  • He'iea," by Cyril Pahinui (Dancing Cat Productions). Pahinui, son of the legendary singer-musician Gabby Pahinui, is a first-time nominee.

  • "Hawaiian Blossom," by Raiatea Helm (Raiatea Helm Records). This is her second nomination.

  • "Treasures of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar," by various artists (Daniel Ho Creations). Ho, a musician and a producer, is Ho is a two-time Hawaiian Music Grammy Award-winning ki ho'alu and 'ukulele performer, whose record label has embraced many locals in the acoustic genre.

The two female nominees learned about their nomination from phone calls from The Advertiser earlier today.

Carrere, a Hollywood veteran with film, TV and recording credits, was in her car in Malibu when she responded to a message. "I nearly drove off the road in Malibu; I'm in tears," she said from her cell phone. With her Hollywood visibility and experience, she either is a darkhorse or a shoo-in.

"I've gotten awards for my acting before, but singing always has been where my heart is," she said. "I will work hard to win it. Being Grammy-nominated is great; being a Grammy winner, well, is greater. There are folks who deserve it far more than me — I mean, these guys, like Keola Beamer and Cyril Pahinui are legendary, and we all grew up with their music — and I can't believe I'm in the game. I will work hard to win it."

"I'm really excited for 2008," said Helm, about her second shot at the Grammys; she was a nominee last year for "Sweet and Lovely." "Well, that (earlier) nomination may have helped me establish myself, and I know what the experience is like having been on the scene. It's nice to know that people in the mainstream industry is supporting Hawaiian music."

Beamer, Pahinui and Ho were not immediately available for reaction.

The Grammys will be handed out Feb. 10 in ceremonies from Staples Center in Los Angeles, with CBS coverage on TV. However, the Hawaiian Grammy is presented off-air and only mentioned during the telecast.
