Crews working to restore electricity on the Big Island

Advertiser Staff

Hawaii Electric Light Co. reports that its crews were able to clear a large tree that fell on transmission lines in the area of Holualoa (Kona), and restore power to approximately 700 customers at 5:04 a.m. today. Isolated power outages are ongoing in the Na'alehu Town, Discovery Harbor, Kahuku Ranch and Waiohinu areas affecting approximately 400 customers. Approximately 100 customers in lower and upper Puna and 10 customers in Kona are affected by isolated power outages.

HELCO personnel are continuing to work to restore power to all customers on the Big Island. Customers in East and West Hawai'i experienced power outages, some beginning late Tuesday evening, as a storm system swarmed over the island of Hawai'i. Fallen trees, gusty winds, lightning strikes and heavy rain caused numerous power outages around the island.

Public safety and the safety of HELCO personnel remains a high priority in the restoration and response activities of this event. Stay away from wires that are down or dangling. Report hazardous conditions, such as sparking wires or unsafe electrical equipment, to HELCO's Trouble Desk at 808-969-6666 as soon as possible. Do not touch fallen or low-hanging wires of any kind. Make sure children stay away from all wires and poles. A seemingly harmless wire may still be energized.

HELCO asks that customers who continue to experience power problems and have yet not reported them to contact the trouble desk at 808-969-6666.
