No power for hundreds in Nanakuli, Maili

Advertiser Staff

Hawaiian Electric Co. tonight restored power about 300 North Shore customers but nearly 450 others in Nanakuli and Ma'ili are still in the dark.

HECO spokeswoman Jan Loose said at 10 p.m. that repair crews are working into the night to get power back on the Leeward Coast.

HECO will stop work and pull its trucks off the roadway to accommodate morning rush-hour traffic flow on Farrington Highway, Loose said.

Only about 100 customers were still without power in the Sunset Beach and Pupukea areas as of 10 p.m., Loose said. The outage number was 400 five hours earlier.

"We know this is a very difficult situation for those who are without power and we appreciate their continued patience," said Lynne Unemori, HECO vice president of corporate relations.

HECO advises customers without power to unplug all sensitive electronic equipment to avoid damage in case of a power surge when power is restored. Power should be turned off to electric water heaters at the circuit breaker to reduce the initial demand for power and reduce the risk of blowing fuses on the circuit when it is restored.
