Power being restored in Kula

Advertiser Staff

KAHULUI, Maui -- Half of Maui Electric Co.'s 3,200 customers in Kula now have power, after losing the lights around 2 a.m. yesterday when poles and distribution lines were brought down by wind and falling trees.

In South Maui, Wailea went back online as of 3 p.m., with Kihei expected to follow shortly, MECO said.

The utility's 20,000 customers in South Maui lost their electricity at 9:40 a.m. yesterday when two transmission lines went down.

MECO advises that problems accessing downed lines in isolated areas of Kula means it may be a while before power is restored to other residents in the Upcountry region.
