HOLIDAYS IN HAWAI‘I

This is the fifth in a series of holiday stories in Island Life this week.

Christmas mailing — two words, which when placed together cause the Grinch green to seep into our normal facial coloration and our ho-ho-hos to become boo-hoo-hoos.

Yes, the lines are arduous and parking at your neighborhood post office can be worse than Ala Moana on a Saturday. It's already too late to mail Kwanzaa cards to Africa. And the suggested deadline to send holiday cards to military addresses in Iraq and Afghanistan was Tuesday.

But here's the good news:

  • The priority mail deadline for cards, letter and packages that are sure to get there by Christmas is still two weeks away, on Dec. 20.

  • With the right software and supplies, shipping from home via the Internet has become much easier. These days, you can order the supplies to come right to your door, and print out labels for shipping from your very own printer. (It doesn't work on certain browsers, however, so do a test-run at www.usps.com before ordering the labels.)

Hawai'i residents know that flat-rate boxes, especially to the East Coast, are great bargains. Two tips: Don't overstuff them (the box needs to lay flat or it may get returned to sender); and buy the postage ahead of time.

That way, when the box of mac nuts and mochi crunch for Auntie Kealoha in Vegas is ready for pickup, all you have to do is sign onto your account, and schedule a pickup. You can even specify how the carrier can pick up the item — including ringing your doorbell.
