KAHULUI
Free program to discuss Myanmar monk protests

Advertiser Staff

Recent protests in Myanmar by Buddhist monks will be the subject of a free program at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

"Burma's Non-Violent Saffron Revolution" will feature Mary Hammond, dean of education at the East-West Center. She has given a number of seminars in Myanmar, and in 2002 she met with human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, who remains under house arrest.

The event will be held in the Alexa Higashi Room next to the Schaeffer Gallery at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Sponsors are the Maui Peace Education Foundation, Maui Peace Action, the American Friends Service Committee of Hawaii and the Foundation for the People of Burma.
