2 Nanakuli fires each cause $5,000 in damage

Advertiser Staff

Two separate building fires in Nanakuli Wednesday night each caused approximately $5,000 in damage, fire officials said Thursday.

The first fire was caused by an unattended candle and the second fire remains under investigation. There were no injuries reported at either fire.

Also, the cause of the fire at 839-B 21st Avenue in Kaimuki remains under investigation.

The first Nanakuli fire occurred in a townhouse at 87-182 Helelua St. at 7:45 p.m. Firefighters found a small fire in the second-floor bedroom that had been controlled by residents with garden hoses. All residents were outside when Honolulu Fire Department firefighters arrived and none required medical attention.

Firefighters extinguished the fire shortly after arrival then helped the residents by removing smoke and water from their home.

A fire investigator determined that an unattended candle in the bedroom used for lighting during the power outage caused the fire.

The second Nanakuli fire occurred in a split-level home at 89-839 Nanakuli Ave. at 8:46 p.m. Firefighters found a small fire in a storage room on the bottom level and had the fire under control by 9:09 p.m. All residents were outside when HFD arrived and none required medical attention.

The cause of this fire is under investigation. Damage is estimated at $5,000.

The Honolulu Fire Department asks residents to be careful whenever they use candles and to never leave them unattended.

Candle wax will melt when the candle burns and can spill and ignite, if the candle is left to burn down to its end. The ignition of the melted candle wax can start a small fire that can grow very quickly.

Children or pets can accidentally bump a candle and tip it over. A candle's open flame can start a fire very quickly when it comes in contact with combustible materials like carpet, bedding, curtains or even furniture.
