Signs posted following West Maui wastewater spill

Advertiser Staff

The state has posted warning signs in West Maui following a wastewater spill Thursday near Kahekili Beach Park.

An undetermined amount of wastewater entered into coastal waters, the state Department of Health said this evening.

Warning signs have been posted from Kahekili Beach Park to Mahana Condos. The public is advised to stay out of coastal waters from Kahekili to Mahana Condos and any coastal waters that are turbid.

In addition, a statewide Brown Water Advisory is still in effect due to continued heavy rains and flooding. The public is reminded to stay out of flood waters that may contain pollutants from overflowing cesspools, sewer manholes, animal wastes, pesticides, chemicals, and associated flood debris. The public should also stay out of coastal waters affected by storm water runoff near stream mouths and drainage ditches.
