Landslide closes Kolekole Pass to public traffic

Advertiser Staff

A landslide has closed Kolekole Pass to public traffic, city officials said this afternoon.

The landslide on the Lualualei side of the road occurred about 2:30 p.m., forcing officials to close the road "for the foreseeable future," said John Cummings, a spokesman for the city's Department of Emergency Management.

No injuries are reported.

The pass, which is on military property, had been opened earlier in the day to give Leeward Coast residents an extra way into and out of their communities, which have been hard hit by storm-related traffic congestion.

According to Emergency Management, Naval Station security personnel could not confirm how long it would take for the road to be reopened, the city said.

No vehicles were on the road at that time.

The State Department of Transportation reports that all four lanes of Farrington Highway in Nanakuli are now open, the city said.
