Power restored to most Maui Electric customers

Advertiser Staff

KAHULUI, Maui — Power has been restored to all but a few of Maui Electric Co.'s 23,200 customers in South Maui and Kula.

MECO spokeswoman Kaui Awai-Dickson said this morning that a few small isolated pockets in Kula remain without electricity due to access problems.

Residents in Makena, Wailea and Kihei lost power at 9:40 a.m. Wednesday when two transmission lines feeding electricity to the region went down due to insulator failures and 11 poles that snapped at their bases from high winds. Kula went dark around 2 a.m. Wednesday when 12 poles and numerous distribution lines were brought down by wind and falling trees.
